On 10 June 1863, Samuel enlisted in Confederate Army in the 10th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment under the command of Gen. Diamond. His brothers, Henry and James had previously enlisted together on the same day, 19 September 1862 . All three were assigned to Company D. Samual was a 4th Sgt.
